A 13-year-old boy who suffered a severe brain injury as a result of medical errors following his birth has been awarded compensation amounting to several millions of pounds, reports the BBC.
Ben Harman was born in Kent and Canterbury Hospital in 2002. After his birth he apparently displayed symptoms associated with low blood sugar, but medical staff failed to check his blood glucose level until two days later, by which time his condition had significantly worsened.
As a result, Ben sustained damage to his brain and is now autistic and has significant learning difficulties. He will be reliant on 24-hour care for the rest of his life.
The hospital apparently didn’t inform Ben’s family about the problems with his low blood sugar at the time, but his parents eventually raised concerns about Ben's development in the first few years of his life.
According to the BBC, the hospital has now admitted liability and apologised to the family for the errors that were made.
