The summer months bring an increased risk of suffering an accident in a public place, according to a recent article by the Irish Injuries Board.

The Board, which is the body responsible for processing personal injury claims in Ireland, reported that the months of July and August saw the highest average number of public liability awards over the past three years.

In 2013 the Board processed more than 1,700 public liability awards, which were worth around €44 million in total.

The most common causes of accidents were slips, trips and falls, which accounted for 67% of the public liability awards. These accidents usually resulted in soft tissue injuries or minor fractures.

The types of locations where people are most likely to be injured are venues that attract families, such as leisure centres, playgrounds and swimming pools. Injuries were sustained in a variety of ways, including children falling off playground equipment, people slipping at the poolside or being bitten by a dog while in a park.
