The data, compiled by the Department for Transport, named drivers or riders failing to look properly as the primary cause of Glasgow accidents.

A total of 1330 casualties on the road happened in 2017, with seven people being killed. Neglectful drivers, the figures say, were a contributing factor to 341 accidents. The runner-up factor being the driver or rider failing to judge the speed of other vehicles, which caused 176 accidents.

The police record 78 different factors that can contribute to car accidents. Among these, the most common factors in Glasgow were:

• the aforementioned poor driving,
• severe weather conditions,
• pedestrians walking onto the road, as well as pedestrians failing to look both ways before crossing the road, and
• bad turns from drivers.

RAC Road Safety Spokesman Pete Williams noted that most of the deaths that occur on the roads are due to "mistakes".

Williams said: "Sadly, the picture doesn’t seem to be improving as these figures are fairly typical of recent years’ data. We need to better understand the root causes of accidents and therefore require more data – something a dedicated road accident investigation body could provide.

"While everyone makes mistakes while driving, motorists need to realise the potential consequences of losing focus on what is a complex and demanding task.

"There are, of course, plenty of accidents that are wholly avoidable and result from driver distractions or impairment such as drink, handheld mobile phone use and driver fatigue."
