Scottish Public Services Ombudsman orders review of radiology practices

NHS Fife has been ordered to arrange an external review of its radiology procedures following The Scottish Public Services Ombudsman upholding a complaint by a patient’s husband.

The patient Mrs C was first referred to Glenrothes Hospital in January 2012 having developed a persistent cough. She underwent a chest X-Ray the results of which were deemed to be normal. She underwent further X-Rays in March 2012 as her symptoms persisted and was advised in June by a respiratory consultant than she had a viral infection. It was only on 20 June that an Orthopaedic Registrar recognised certain sings and arranged for urgent tests the results of which sadly revealed that Mrs C was suffering from lung cancer which had spread to her kidney, lung, bones and brain. Mrs C passed away in July 2012.

NHS Fife were also ordered to and have apologised to Mrs C’s family for the five month delay in diagnosis.
